Havikoro - Interview

So, to start with the interview, tell us something about the history of your crew?

It all started when K.O.R.O (Knights of Rhythm Odyssey) formed in 1994 as a hip hop street dance crew. Havik was formed focusing on Breakin. The two crews united at Freestylesession in 1999 to compliment each others unique styles and since then the Mighty Havikoro crew was established.

Who are the actual members of Havikoro Crew?

Active members are: Lil John, Mario, Colcutz, Rick, Joel, Palmer, Kirk, Nate, Moy, Marlon, Rudy, Comp 1, Joe B, Blas

How did you start Bboying?

For most of us, we picked it up from watching it on videos, early movies like breakin, beat street etc. Some of us were inspired by moves and styles from local pioneers.

Tribal is promoting and helping B-boy crews around the world. Tell us how did the collaboration with Tribal happen?

It happened after Out For Fame. Moy was already sponsored so after the event Tribal put the whole crew down.

We know that Texas has dope crews like Jive Turkeys, Vicious Germz, United B-Boys, Havikoro etc. How is the relationship between these crews? Is it more competitive or are you cool with most of the other members?

It's always competitive but we know all these guys personally and there is much love for all these crews.

You have battled with many crews in your carrier. Is there any crew you admire and you wanna battle because you never had the chance to?

There are so many great crews all over the world but Gamblers and Rivers are crews that impress. They are cool guys but we can never seem to fall in the same bracket at jams to battle.

Any new and talented crews that are not so well known and you want to mention?

The Nic Naxs are a force to be wrecking with man! They are a group of elementary kids that we are training!

Tell us about the battles your crew have entered so far. Which one dou you recall as your best and which one as the worse battle so far. Tell us why.

The best is against Style Elements in 1999, because it was our first Freestylesession. The worst was two weeks ago at this last Freestylesession.

Anything new that is coming from you and you like to mention?New releases or particular events you are about to enter?

Joel and Mario are opening a Hip Hop clothing store here in Houston. We are focusing a lot on our shows and trying to hit up events when we can.

How do you see B-boyin as a whole? Also as something to make a living?

We believe B-boyin is alive and thriving. B-boy is a way of life. It’s the way we breathe. As for it being a livelihood, it’s all about the connections you make along the way. Basically, you market yourself and your crew.

How many times are you practicing within a week? Anything in particular you do mentally or physically before you give a performance?

We practice every day, every chance we get to stay on top.

What do you do except practicing or performing? Any hobbies you have?

Havikoro is one main unit but we still show our individualities and this reflects on each member’s unique style. This also shows through in our hobbies.

Do you have any specific advice for people who just started b-boying?

We would tell them to learn the foundations correctly. You have to be committed and determined. Never give up. As long as you keep growing and learning and knowing you still have room to grow, you’re in the right path. You have to know what dance is really all about.

What is your opinion about the B-boys crews all over the world. Which do you think are the best among them?

There is mad competition out there and Crews come up with new moves every day. No doubt, Havikoro is the best.

How do you see the B-Boy movement nowadays?

B-boy movement is doing well right now. The only thing to watch out for is competitions taking the rawness out of b-boying. B-boying is an art and should be treated like that.

Any last words for the audience in Greece?

Just come out and enjoy some good Hip-hop culture with us.
