Compton's Most Wanted-Music To Drive-By
Disc Info Music to Driveby is the third studio album by Compton based hip hop group, Compton's Most Wanted. It was released in 1992 through Orpheus Records, with production from DJ Slip and The Unknown DJ. Music to Driveby is seen as one of the great Gangsta rap albums from the golden age of hip hop. Similar to N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton, Music To Driveby included similar themes. It is notable for the single Hood Took Me Under, which was later included in videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' radio station "Radio Los Santos", and has been considered a classic example of Gangsta Rap by reviewers. The album reached platinum status and contained the diss to rapper Tim Dog, "Who's Fucking Who?". The album peaked #66 at the Billboard 200 in its first week.

One of gangsta rap's defining albums, O.G. Original Gangster is a sprawling masterpiece that stands far and away as Ice-T's finest hour. Taken track by track, O.G. might not seem at first like the product of a unified vision; perspective-wise, it's all over the map. There's perceptive social analysis, chilling violence, psychological storytelling, hair-trigger rage, pleas for solutions to ghetto misery, cautionary morality tales, and cheerfully crude humor in the depictions of sex and defenses of street language. But with a few listens, it's possible to assimilate everything into a complex, detailed portrait of Ice-T's South Central L.A. roots -- the album's contradictions reflect the complexities of real life. That's why the more intelligent, nuanced material isn't negated by the violence and sexism -- both of which, incidentally, are held relatively in check, with the former having been reshaped into a terrifying but inescapable fact of life. That isn't to say that O.G. Original Gangster is designed to appeal to delicate intellectual sensibilities; it's still full of raw, street-level aggression that makes no apologies or concessions. That goes for the music as well as the lyrics. The beats are a little too hard-driving and jittery to really breathe like funk, which only adds to the dark, claustrophobic feel of the production. Ice smoothly keeps up with the music's furious pace and also debuts his soon-to-be-notorious metal band Body Count on one track. That kind of artistic ambition is all over the album, whether in the lean musical attack or the urgent rhymes. O.G. Original Gangster is a certifiable gangsta rap classic, and arguably the most realistic, unvarnished representation of a world Ice-T was the first to chronicle on record.
Smokin' weed, feelin' fine, steady gettin' blowed Makin' niggaz understand and I'm lettin' these hoes know (Devin) Don't keep steppin', steady stayin' on the scene Doin' what I want to do But some say that I'm takin' it to the X-treme

You might recognize Mad CJ Mac's name from a few high profile guest appearances he made during the 90s on some other west coast artists' albums. His 1995 debut, "True Game," was released on Rap-A-Lot Records, making him one of the Houston label's few west coast artists during their mid-90s heyday. Mad CJ Mac is an immensely talented individual, both on the mic and on the mixing boards.

The Conscious Daughters, who emerged in the socially aware, Afrocentric milieu of early-'90s Bay Area hip-hop, were a female rap duo from Oakland consisting of Carla Green and Karryl Smith. Ultra-political, militant hip-hopper Paris championed the pair early on and helmed their 1993 debut, Ear to the Street, producing and writing all of the tracks and (along with engineer Eric Valentine) playing on them as well. The themes echoed the "thug-life" sentiments of much of the West Coast hip-hop at the time, employing a distinctly women's perspective (particularly on tracks such as "Princess of Poetry," "Wife of a Gangsta," and "Crazybitchmadness").
